“Keep on Walking”

Within the Longo family, there definitely exists a “walking gene.” My father and I love to take long walks, just about anywhere. I enjoy walks around the neighborhood, the beach (it’s been almost nine years though) and any mall (Boston’s Downtown Crossing sounds good right about now).

Jimmy set a River Valley baseball record with 27 walks in 23 games (over a 162-game Major League schedule, that would be 189 walks).

Now, he is going to try to “walk-on” as a non-scholarship football player at Ohio State. When we met coach Urban Meyer on Sunday, Coach told us that the Buckeyes always need extra linemen. He was impressed by Jimmy’s academics (42,000 applied to main campus, Jimmy was one of 7,000 who got accepted) and athletics (Division IV first team All-Ohio offensive lineman on team that finished undefeated in the regular season, good enough to play American Legion baseball).

So, we’ll see. What made me most proud was that when Coach Meyer left the Barnett Field press box, Jimmy told him, “Thanks Coach for giving me the opportunity.”

An opportunity is all anyone can ask for.
