“Banana Republic”

In July 1986, while interning at the Army Times Publishing Company, I drove into Alexandria and visited a clothing store called “Banana Republic.” It included a wide range of khaki safari wear, akin to what a TV news reporter would wear into a war zone (or befitting Jack Hanna and the late Steve Irwin).

Anyway, I bought a T-shirt with the insignia “Minister of Propaganda.” I thought it was appropriate for an aspiring journalist.

Twenty eight years later, Dr. Charles Krauthammer (who was still a moderate liberal in 1986) now thinks the U.S. has become a Banana Republic. Listen:
