Racial problems are nothing to new to the city of Boston, the capital of liberal Democratic Massachusetts. Ask Bill Russell what it was like to buy a house in Reading, a Boston suburb, during the 1960’s. Ask Jim Rice what it was like to play for the Red Sox during the 1970’s and 1980’s, when violent protests erupted against a federal judge’s efforts to integrate Boston’s public school system through forced busing.
